Message by Dr. Paul Connett for the Florence great event!
This famous city needs your help!
Of all the places in the world where you would not expect a complete lack of vision on waste (or rather resource) management it is Florence in Italy. Elsewhere in Tuscany other cities like Capannori have taken the lead in the Zero Waste movement but not in Florence where activists and citizens have hit a brick wall of arrogance. Such is the legacy left this magnificent city by Italy’s new Prime minister Mr Renzi. He and his cronies have been trying for years to build a trash incinerator in the city – or rather in its much-abused neighbor Sesto Fiorentino. This city not only hosted an old incinerator, which was closed down because of excessive dioxin emissions but also hosts a huge landfill and an airport which is being doubled in size.
