This famous city needs your help!

Of all the places in the world where you would not expect a complete lack of vision on waste (or rather resource) management it is Florence in Italy. Elsewhere in Tuscany other cities like Capannori have taken the lead in the Zero Waste movement but not in Florence where activists and citizens have hit a brick wall of arrogance. Such is the legacy left this magnificent city by Italy’s new Prime minister Mr Renzi. He and his cronies have been trying for years to build a trash incinerator in the city – or rather in its much-abused neighbor Sesto Fiorentino. This city not only hosted an old incinerator, which was closed down because of excessive dioxin emissions but also hosts a huge landfill and an airport which is being doubled in size.

This past Saturday (April 16) along with Rossano Ercolini, I attended and spoke at a rally in Sesto Fiorentino organized by an exciting new group, “Mothers Against Incineration”.

These “mamas” mean business and really have been a shot of adrenalin into the bloodstream of those stalwarts who have been fighting this incinerator for years.

In addition to some stirring speeches from the “mamas” music was provided by a well-known Italian rock star as well as a band that hails from the leading “zero waste” town in Italy (Capannori).

This band (Gaudats Junk Band) contains some talented musicians but what makes them a favorite is they play on instruments made from discarded materials. The sounds that they make are remarkable and they bring a lot of smiles even on the faces of those who are confronted with the otherwise grim task of trying to save some of the planet from the stupidity and greed of short-sighted politicians; politicians who would blindly swap toxics for sustainability.

There can hardly be a person on the planet that has not been touched in some way by the art that was created in this great city. It is (or should be) a huge embarrassment for Florence, Italy and the whole world that this city’s future should be tarnished in this way.

That is why I am asking your help to send a message to the “Mothers Against Incineration” (mammenoinceneritore@gmail.com)  so that your words can be read out at the “Great Event” they are organizing for the center of Florence on May 14.

Rossano Ercolini  believes that this incinerator battle is the most important in Italy. If citizens win it could spell the end of new incinerator proposals and greatly undermine Mr. Renzi’s influence on these matters.

Meanwhile, here are some of the words from one of those “mamas” who kicked off Saturday’s rally. We are here today because this time we really want to stop them.

From today, from here, we are all responsible for our future.

Together we will create the Great Event on 14th May which starting from the Tuscany Region building will end in the center of Florence where the “Power” buildings are.

The Florentines now know that this is the incinerator of Florence.

Modern incinerators emit more particles than the old stove (incinerator) of San Donnino, which caused so many deaths. It is now useless that Nardella (mayor of Florence) now wants to demolish this ‘great monument’ that looks like a gun pointed to the sky: memory remains!

Modern incinerators are more dangerous than the old one ones.

The high temperatures and the filters do not block the emissions of ultrafine particles, which penetrate into cells and can even affect the structure of DNA.

We’re talking about lead, dioxin, arsenic and many other substances that emerge in the incinerator’s invisible smoke.

We are talking about 198,000 tons of waste per year, some of which comes from outside Florence.

Fine dust that will follow the wind route.

And the wind that doesn’t know any boundaries, It doesn’t know town limits…

And we also want to be like the wind.

We should not have boundaries.

From the suburbs, where they want to build this monster and other “great” works, a fight has been spreading like wild-fire.

We are here to show that these are not the poorest districts of Florence. These are the richest areas of Florence, where is has been possible to reintroduce the language of solidarity and mutual aid! From the bottom of society, house by house, we have built a social network. Because we are those of the circular economy and they are those of the cashier’s check!

The real wealth starts from here.

From the alternatives of recovery, recycling that exist and that are already carried out in hundreds of cities. From Capannori to San Francisco, from Treviso to Empoli the future is just around the corner…

Florence does not deserve an incinerator. Florence the heart of the Renaissance. Florence a city saved by the partisans.

Florence, famous around the world must now be the Stalingrad of incinerators.

And this will have a worldwide echo. We can do it… Today it’s time to change direction. Once we were fighting to defend our rights. Today we are fighting for the survival of the planet, a planet we must deliver to our children. Our children are the ones that are threatened most. Because their developing tissues are more vulnerable and because the repercussions will extend over many years of their lives. What we now deliver to them and to ourselves is a message of life, a message of hope, which only this struggle can provide.

But we want to go beyond hope.

From these suburbs that have become a landfill, and today could become a social laboratory, we are anticipating a different world, and together we can build it!!!

Come to the Great Event on May 14.

Thank you for your attention and anticipated help!

Paul Connett
